The Aquarius Plateau has also become popular with riders and could be the next mapping project on the agenda. On a clear day visitors are able to see into New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada. The trails reach within a quarter-mile of the highest point on the plateau.
Owens said it's a matter of coming up with the money, manpower and time.
Syrett said he spent days riding, plotting and recording information on the various trails on the plateau. Thus far, hundreds of miles of trails have been plotted.
The main Paunsaugunt trail is 23 miles long. But, branching off are a number of loops. The "Straight Canyon to Crawford Canyon" loop, for example, is exactly 15.6 miles long, and by riding at an average speed of 14 miles per hour, it takes a little over one hour to complete.
All together, he said, "there are close to 200 miles of trails coming off the main 23-mile Paunsaugunt trail. There are also many old logging roads coming off the different loops where riding is allowed.
Seiler said they were able to get a grant from the state in conjunction with the Garfield County Trails Committee and Bryce Canyon Natural History Association. This money was used for production and signage, which is expected to be in place before Memorial Day.
"The signs will complement the maps. If riders see a sign that says '14,' for example, all they need to do is look on the map, locate the number 14 and they know exactly where they are," he explained.
The main trailhead for the Paunsaugunt leaves from Ruby's Inn, which, continued Seiler, means a limited amount of trailering for ATV owners.
"They can park and go out and ride, days at a time if they want, and never have to load their ATVs up and drive to another trailhead.
"That's something else we found. People want to get out and ride, they don't want to have to drive all over to find a place where they can unload and ride."
Many of those who've ridden in the area concur that few places offer more spectacular scenery or the abundance of wildlife, mainly deer and elk, with some antelope in the lower elevations.
Also, riding along the Paunsaugunt, looking off to the west, the scenery is a near mirror image of the Bryce Canyon landscape.
