Summit County Democratic Party Chairman Rob Weyher has been charged with driving under the influence, assault on a police officer, interfering with a police officer, speeding and failure to signal.

The misdemeanor charges, stemming from an April 24 traffic stop near Kimball Junction, were filed by the Summit County attorney Tuesday in 3rd District Court in Park City.

Weyher's attorney, Joe Tesch, said, "We haven't seen the charges. But from what we know, he's totally innocent. We want this tried in a court of law — not in the press."

The county Democratic committee met Monday and voted to retain the 54-year-old chairman.

"A person is innocent until proven guilty," committee member Laura Bonham said. If Weyher is convicted, the committee may revisit the issue, she said.
