Granger star sparkles at prep invitational
Granger's Maria Halton burst from the gates to pick up wins in the 100 and 200 meters, took second in the 400 and captured the long jump en route to being named the meet's Most Outstanding Girl Athlete. Halton ran times of 12.48 and 25.80 in the two sprints. She finished with a best mark of 18-1.25 to easily win the long jump as well.
Davis High hurdles star Ashlee Cannon took firsts in both hurdles races, winning the 100 in a time of 15.39 and the 300 at 46.74. Cannon has been the premiere hurdler in 5A in the state the past two seasons. Teammate Candace Eddy, a freshman, was victorious in both the 800 (2:21.05) and 3200 (11:19.34). In the latter race, run at the end of a very long day for all competitors in the popular T-Ville meet, she took the lead from Jordan's Erin Fuller with exactly two laps to go and ran away for the win.
Bingham's Jessie Nielsen won the 400, Cassie Ricks of Fremont was first in the 1600 and Davis won both the 400 and 1600 relays while Fremont took the medley relay.
The other double winner was Davis' Alayna Ferrin in the shot put (38-8) and discus (118-01). Viewmont's Ada Robinson won the high jump at 5-2, edging Clearfield's Ausha Douglas on fewer misses, and Torlee Nenbee of Cyprus won the javelin at 119-01.
The Lady Darts easily won the team title, scoring 133 points. Fremont was second at 58.5, followed by Riverton, Granger and Copper Hills.
Judge Memorial's Colin Boevers earned the boy's Outstanding Athlete honor for his wins in both the shot put (61-0) and discus (178-01). Those marks obliterated the competition in both events. The only other double winner in boys was Cottonwood's Mikey Payne, who took the 100 (11.36) and 200 meters (22.71), the latter by just one one-hundreth of a second over Timpanogos' Silas Pimentel.
Jared Ward of Davis had a big win in the 3200 meters, traversing the course in a time of 9:43.96. Other track event winners included Chris Bringhurst of Timpanogos in the 400 meters, Fremont's Ryan Jones in the 800, Conner Kamm of Skyline in the 1600, Josh White of Lehi in the 110 hurdles, and Dan Seethaler of Alta in the 300 hurdles. Relay winning teams came from Timpanogos in the 400 and 1600 meter relays and Viewmont in the medley.
Field event champs also included Ryker Morgan of Viewmont with a 6-4 high jump mark, Bingham's Zach Cook in the long jump at 22-9, and Alex Hill of Davis in the javelin at 174-03.
Davis edged Viewmont by eight points, 83.5 to 75.5, for the team title. Timpanogos, Alta and Fremont rounded out the top five in boys' scoring.
Next week's schedule includes the state's longest-running invitational, the Davis High Invite, on Saturday. Also on Saturday, invitationals are planned in Cedar City, Richfield, Millard High and Pleasant Grove. That sets the stage for the annual BYU Invitational on May 5 and 6 in Provo, the last meet before region and state meets the following two weeks.
