10 finalists announced in Entrepreneur Challenge

The David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah has announced the 10 finalist teams for the 2006 Utah Entrepreneur Challenge, a statewide business plan competition.

The finalist teams are:

• Collective Medical Technologies, which formed an Internet service that tracks medical records between facilities.
• Core Footwear, which featured anatomically molded midsoles for outdoor shoes.
• Five Star Painting, which provides a subscription-based service for contractors and accurately estimates needed labor and material for paint jobs.
• KAM Accelerometer Inc., which leverages accelerometer technology to measure an individual's energy usage, acting as a personal trainer.
• Precision Surveying Solutions, which provides a data collection instrument for civil engineers and land surveyors.
• Quantum Building Products, which manufactures building products.
• ResCue Medical Systems, which develops and markets user-friendly systems for CPR training.
• Spectrotek, which markets the Macular Carotenoid Detector, a device used to detect macular degeneration.
• Teleoptic Digital Imaging, which uses digital radiography equipment as an alternative to X-rays.

• Thermacom Inc., which provides an alternative, non-invasive diagnosis of VUR, a condition associated with urinary tract infections.

More than 200 teams submitted business plans from universities and colleges around the state. The 10 finalist teams are from the U., Brigham Young University and Dixie College.

Each of the finalists will present their businesses to a panel of judges today. The final awards banquet will be Thursday at the University of Utah's Rice-Eccles Stadium Tower.

A cash prize of $40,000 in seed money is awarded to the team that presents the most plausible and promising business plan. Secondary prizes also will be awarded, including cash and in-kind services worth more than $100,000.
