Judge sends woman to jail for having too many dogs
Janet Lane came to the Matheson Courthouse to be sentenced on three misdemeanor charges. She brought with her a small poodle, which she left in the car.
When her attorney informed 3rd District Judge Stephen Henriod that Lane now had only seven dogs, as opposed to the eight she had when charged in October, the judge became upset.
"There's a continuing violation of the law," Henriod said, comparing the matter to a person who pleads guilty to robbery and then continues to commit robberies.
Lane's lawyer, Victoria Cramer, said she had attempted to challenge Herriman's ordinance that allows residents to have only two dogs. Lane fosters unwanted animals for local shelters, so when her court challenge failed, she had nowhere to place the dogs.
"She should have taken a gun and shot the other five before she came back here," Henriod said.
The judge then sentenced Lane, 45, to 180 days in jail, time that would be converted to probation if Lane obeys the law. As a deputy placed Lane in handcuffs, she asked what she should do about the dog in her car.
