ALPINE — Alpine's mayor was given a raise Tuesday night.

Alpine's City Council decided to push up Mayor Hunt Willoughby's monthly salary to $800. The council amended the city's budget to note the raise.

Although the budget with adjustments to the part-time mayor's salary had been approved, the council failed to have a required public hearing on the issue of the mayor's salary.

As a result, a public hearing and vote was put on Tuesday's agenda, said Janis Williams, Alpine city recorder.

Residents had varied opinions about the raise. Still, it was approved unanimously by the council.

The raise was originally factored into the budget to keep the mayor's salary in line with a raise the City Council previously received.

American Fork, Highland, Lehi, Lindon and Pleasant Grove mayors, which are part time, earn more than $800 per month.

The mayors of Cedar Hills, Mapleton, Spanish Fork and Springville earn less; from $500 to $756 a month.
