Solitude Mountain Resort has teamed up with Wasatch Backcountry Rescue to open up the third transceiver park in the Wasatch Mountains.
With backcountry travel at an all-time high, rescue training facilities have never been more welcome. While many backcountry travelers have the required equipment for safe travel, they do not have the proper education or practice in utilizing their equipment.
Located in the northwest corner of Solitude's Entry 1 parking lot, the rescue facility will allow users to practice finding one to four buried "targets" in the snow using their avalanche transceivers and probes. A flashing light and siren indicate when a target has been found and the rescue time is recorded.
"With our backcountry access gates and the increasing number of backcountry travelers in Big Cottonwood Canyon, we are constantly looking for opportunities to educate and prepare those enthusiasts and thus ensure greater safety beyond resort boundaries," said Keith Sternfels, Solitude ski patrol assistant director.
YOUTH WILDLIFE FAIR
The International Sportsmen's Exposition will be held March 16-19 at the South Towne Center.
As part of the event, children will be able to shoot arrows, handle animal antlers and horns, catch a fish, and participate in activities that are designed to teach them more about Utah's wildlife.
The activities are part of the Youth Wildlife Fair sponsored by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources.
The center is located at 9575 S. State. The cost to attend the exposition, which includes the youth fair, is $10 for those 13 years of age and older. Children 12 years of age and younger are free.
This year the fishing pond will be turned into an ice-fishing stage. Holes will be drilled through a wooden platform over the pond, which kids will be able to fish through.
