Twelve things you might not know about Bode Miller:

1. He was born at home.

2. In his first year of medical school, Miller's father, Woody, burned all his notes and books two weeks before exams — a ploy to flunk out, according to Miller's autobiography, "Bode: Go Fast, Be Good, Have Fun." Later Woody Miller flunked pediatrics and was booted from school. His father had been president of the American Medical Association.

3. In 1982, Woody Miller won the John Lennon Peace Prize for forming the Turtle Party, which stood for The United Resolution to Love Earth.

4. Bode Miller started skiing at age 3. He got into trouble, he says, for going too straight.

5. He was an all-state high school soccer player in New Hampshire. Years later he suggested to USA Today that he could have made it to the level of Brazilian great Ronaldo.

6. He made his first breakthrough at the 1996 Junior Olympics, winning the giant slalom and super-G on hourglass-shaped "carving skis." It started a revolution in the sport. Miller calls it a "eureka moment."

7. At Carrabassett Valley Academy in Maine, Miller refused to write his final English paper, received a grade of incomplete and didn't receive a diploma. Miller disagreed with the "structure" of the assignment.

8. In his senior year, he tore through a snowboard halfpipe on giant slalom skis and flipped a 720 in front of his classmates.

9. He's a first-rate bowler.

10. He was ranked No. 2 on Outside magazine's 2004 "Ultimate Bad Boys of the Outdoors" list. Men's Journal named him the second-greatest athlete in the world.

11. He's the first skier to compete in every World Cup race in a season for three consecutive seasons.

12. On his Sirius radio show — "The Bode Show" — Miller, his friends and other racers talk about experiences on and off the Alpine circuit and listen to music. A recent playlist included:

Audioslave: "Doesn't Remind Me"

Nirvana: "Aneurysm"

50 Cent: "Patiently Waiting"
