Opponents argue that field is beautiful as natural open space and needs to be preserved. The land could be beautified as a cemetery complementing the Mount Olivet grounds just to the north.

The Planning Commission will offer a recommendation on the issue to the City Council, which will ultimately decide the matter.

Earlier Wednesday, the Planning Commission learned that Salt Lake City will have to come up with $1 million to build a second TRAX stop on a short connection between the Delta Center and the new Intermodal Hub.

Ralph Jackson, an official with the Utah Transit Authority, told the Planning Commission Wednesday that UTA would begrudgingly accept a two-station design but only if the city or an outside developer paid for the second station on 400 West near 100 South, in addition to one at 475 W. 200 South. The cost of that station would be more than $1 million and would cost $150,000 in annual operating costs.

The Planning Commission approved a two-stop design with the understanding that the 200 South station would be built now at 525 West and then the potential second stop could only be built if there was a future demand for it.
