Residents in Draper believe LDS temple is worth any drawbacks

"It was perceived at first that there was going to be a horrible impact," Rowland said.

But traffic studies showed there wouldn't be an overall significant impact on traffic and there hasn't been, he said. Part of that is because of the way temples are used. Unlike schools or churches that have scheduled meetings with beginning and ending times, LDS temples have a steady stream of users throughout the day.

The community needs to know that what traffic studies show is probably correct," Rowland said. "With no start/stop time, there really isn't a perceived increase in traffic."

Unlike the Draper Temple, the Bountiful Temple was built before most of the houses that surround it were built, he said. Church and city officials planned the temple site and planned to surround it with a subdivision. So those who bought homes there knew what they were getting into.

Melissa Comrie, a real estate agent, said since the church's announcement to build the temple in Corner Canyon last year, real estate prices have skyrocketed and development has boomed.

That's pretty typical anytime a temple is announced in Utah; just look at what is happening in Daybreak now, Comrie said. There is a real market for people who want to live near the temple.

In addition to selling four homes near the Draper Temple site since it was announced, Comrie decided to build a home of her own there. She said she's not worried about increased traffic in her neighborhood.

Traffic may not even be an issue since the temple is expected to be comparatively small in size and accommodate fewer people, she said, but if roads do end up needing to be modified, she's confident the LDS Church will handle things well.

The church has quality architects and engineers who do a good job with everything, Comrie said.

Far from having concerns about the area's upcoming addition, she said she believes that everything about the temple will be positive.

"If you look at that canyon, it's the prettiest part in all of Draper, and the temple will add to that," Comrie said. "It's a big draw; I think it will be one of the premier places to live in the city."
