Members of Utah's congressional delegation reacted to news of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby's indictment Friday in a somber tone characterized by brevity and a call to let justice work its course.

"These are serious charges, and we need to take them seriously," said Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah. "Mr. Libby has served his country for a long time and deserves his day in court. The burden lies on Mr. Fitzgerald to prove his case, not on Mr. Libby to prove his innocence."

Said Sen. Bob Bennett, R-Utah, "If Scooter Libby actually did what he's accused of doing, it was really stupid and he deserves to lose his job. We'll find out for sure when the trial is over."

Rep. Jim Matheson, the only Democrat in the delegation, called it "a sad day for our country."

"No issue is more important for the federal government than our national security. These are serious charges, and I hope that our system of justice will now help us get to the truth. If wrongdoing is proven, those responsible should be held accountable for their actions."
