Mayor's father dies

Evan Billings, the father of Provo Mayor Lewis Billings, passed away Thursday afternoon, less than six hours before the mayor appeared in a televised debate with challenger Dave Bailey.

Evan Billings was involved in an automobile accident in the Salt Lake Valley on Wednesday and passed away Thursday at about 1:30 p.m., Provo spokeswoman Raylene Ireland confirmed.

Thursday's debate was vigorous but clearly subdued compared to Tuesday night's debate, when the men exchanged the barbs that have become characteristic in what most believe is a close race.
