Voters go to polls today

Forbush is part of an activist group trying to keep big-box stores from locating at the site of a former gravel pit. Meyer has not openly spoken in support or opposition of the gravel pit development.

In West Jordan, Mayor Bryan Holladay is facing a challenge from Jeff Haaga, David B. Newton, Brian D. Pitts and Richard E. Jackman. Issues in the city include growth, spending and whether to change the form of city government to allow for a full-time mayor.

Three Salt Lake City Council districts are up this election. In Districts 1 and 3, Carlton Christensen and Eric Jergensen are seeking to retain their seats. Christensen faces Leslie Benns, F. Joseph Irish, Terry W. Jessop and Arnold M. Jones. Jergensen is running against Edward James Aho, Derek Dyer and Janneke House. District 7 is up for grabs as Dale Lambert decided not to run again. Six candidates — Matt Dalton, Amy Jordan, Gordon O. Poulson, Gary A. Riehle, Soren D. Simonsen and Danny Walz — hope to replace him.

In Davis County, Layton and Farmington have hotly contested races for mayor and city council. In Farmington, residents are challenging the mayor over a development proposed for Main Street. In Layton, three-term Mayor Jerry Stevenson's decision to step down has prompted three current council members and one former council member to run for mayor.

Residents in 18 Utah County cities go to the polls today to decide which candidates in 31 races will move on to the general election in November.

The contests include mayoral races in Alpine, American Fork, Eagle Mountain, Genola, Goshen, Highland, Lehi, Pleasant Grove, Saratoga Springs and Woodland Hills.

Six of those cities will have new mayors because only four — Goshen, Lehi, Pleasant Grove and Saratoga Springs — have incumbent mayors seeking new terms in office.
