• Local business owner Randy Watts, 57, has served as an interim Logan City Council member, on the zoning advisory committee, employee search committee for Logan and as a USU trustee. Watts wants careful long-term planning to address future growth and budget concerns in Logan. "We need to keep the taxpayers' dollars in the black and set money aside for future demands within each of our departments," Watts said. The water table in west Logan is also a concern Watts said needs to be addressed because it affects drainage and sewage.

• Retired deputy assistant Secretary of the Army Val Ewell, 70, listed management, planning and sprawl as challenges demanding attention. He said growth in the city and county is not being well-managed. Debt, Ewell said, is another major concern facing Logan. "We've spent ourselves almost into oblivion," Ewell said. "When Mayor (Darla) Clark left, we had a $26 million surplus and now we have somewhere between $52 and $54 million debt. We have a bond rating that is not far above being a junk rating. Something has to be done to get that debt in hand."

• Peter G. Brunson, 61, is a retired mechanical designer, graphic artist and photographer who taught engineering graphics for Utah State University. He wants each resident to realize the importance of the city's general plan. "When we revise the general plan, we are actually revising the impact of the city on your life," said Brunson, who staged an unsuccessful city council campaign in the past. "The citizens of Logan should vote on the general plan." Additionally, Brunson wants to invite the public to help in processes like the construction of the budget. Open government, he said, means government works out in the open.
