Drake Meyer, 58, wades into politics for the first time with this run; he has been an accountant for 25 years. He wants to use his financial experience to assure residents of unincorporated Salt Lake County they could annex into Sandy without major tax increases. Meyer also wants to "devise budgets that would be responsible, frugal, yet still serve the needs of the city," he said. "The needs of public safety would be my highest concern."

City Council District 3

Bryant F. Anderson, 63, has sat on the City Council for nearly 20 years, and he said the best method for growth in Sandy is to work with all members of the community. "Along with this planning, we need to develop a sense of community so that residents will participate in making Sandy a great place to live and raise a family," he said.

Brigitte Dawson, 61, is concerned about Sandy's fire and police departments. "For our city to keep the safe atmosphere we now enjoy, we have to retain our present top-notched personnel through benefits that are comparable with those offered by other communities," she said. "It is obvious that economic development — not raising taxes — is the key factor to this constant struggle."

Dan Deuel, 32, said his greatest concern for Sandy is property rights and ensuring Sandy does not use eminent domain to seize property. Additionally, Deuel said he wants to make sure "immigration issues do not go ignored and that the city can adequately respond to a terrorist attack."

At Large:

Sylvia Skinner Andersen, 56, wants to make Sandy more business-friendly so as to "grow our tax base," she said. Andersen, who produces trade shows, said the city needs to revitalize itself with a combination of new business and managing growth. "We must walk the fine line of embracing the future and respecting the past," she said.

• Real estate broker Max Burdick, 54, wants to improve roads to decrease traffic congestion in Sandy. Also, "public safety must always be evaluated and re-evaluated," he said. "The safety of our residents, from our children to our seniors, demand our highest priority." Burdick also supports "careful planning for and maintaining a healthy commercial and retail tax base."

Danica Nelson, 28, wants to ensure that police officers receive competitive salaries by revising the city budget instead of raising taxes. Nelson, who works as a director of billing, hopes for strong citizen participation in city affairs, and said that "when faced with issues of growth, such as the development of the the gravel pit, I will act in the interest of the citizens."

Steve Smith, 45, wants to slow what he said is "a tremendous turnover rate among our police officers," which reduces "the force's ability to effectively respond when called upon." Smith, an accountant, wants to develop "responsible, balanced city budgets and ensure that services are delivered efficiently."

• Attorney A. Jason Velez, 34, wants to study traffic flows on major roads in Sandy to coordinate light timing and "avoid unnecessary congestion and long travel times during peak hours." Velez wants more resident participation in city hall affairs; he proposes direct mail notices of City Council meetings.
