Use of 'Utes' by U. sits well in Ute country

He just doesn't know who they are.

And neither does Mr. Stearmer, who is in his first year as principal at Uintah High School. "We feel it's an honor to use the name, as long as we don't mishandle it," he says.

The latest NCAA fuss has, however, caused Uintah High to review a line in its school song that goes, " . . . will ever scalp dame victory Yes!"

"We looked it up and the original author meant 'scalp' in the context of taking victory from defeat," says Stearmer. "But people may not hear it that way. So we're looking to see if there isn't a different way of phrasing that one line. I think we could change that word. We could 'snatch' dame victory from defeat.

"We want to always be the Utes, but every year we'd like to get just a little bit better at it."
