One Utah state senator has been honored by his peers for his work in protecting children from tobacco exposure in bars and taverns.

The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids presented an award to Sen. Michael Waddoups, R-Taylorsville, for his "leadership in advocating policies to protect kids from tobacco," according to a news release. The honor was given to him because of his sponsorship of legislation, which failed to pass during this year's general session, that would have prohibited indoor smoking in bars and taverns.

"Senator Waddoups has been a leader in the fight against tobacco use and has made a real difference in protecting our kids from tobacco addiction," said William Corr, executive director of the campaign, said in the news release.

The honor was given to Waddoups last week in Seattle during the annual meeting for the National Conference of State Legislatures. Legislators from other states who have sponsored legislation for tobacco prevention programs, smoke-free workplaces rules, and increased tobacco taxes were also honored.
