If you go on the Mormon Trail
FREE HANDCARTS: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provides handcarts free to anyone wishing to experience pulling them at Martin's Cove, which is about 50 miles southwest of Casper, and at Sixth Crossing, which is about 50 miles west of Martin's Cove. Details at www.handcart.com or 307-328-2953.
SHORT TREK: Martin's Cove offers a trek that is about five miles round trip within the historic site. The trail leads to an area where pioneers took refuge from a fierce snowstorm in 1856. More than 100 died before the rest were rescued.
STRENUOUS TREK: The trek that begins at Sixth Crossing, which is next to Sweetwater Station on the Wyoming state highway map, extends for 28 miles one way and ends at a place called Rock Creek. The full trek takes two days. There is a campground with water and restroom facilities halfway along the trek for those making the two-day journey or those who want to skip the first half of the trek. Another campground is located at Rock Creek.
COST: Groups of 26 or more people must pay a $4 per person permit fee to the Bureau of Land Management. No permit fee is required of individuals or families with fewer than 26 people or in fewer than three vehicles.
