Communities mark Pioneer Day

Communities throughout Utah will celebrate Pioneer Day this weekend with a variety of activities. Here is a list of planned events:

Beaver County

Beaver: Saturday, Pioneer Day celebrations and parade, Beaver City Park; Beaver Lions Club horse race, (888)848-5081, Sunday, jackpot roping; (435) 438-2451.

Cache County

Mendon: Saturday, 7 a.m., flag ceremony; 7:10 a.m., breakfast; 7:15 a.m., fun runs; 8:30 a.m., free pancake-eating contest; 8 a.m.-7:30 p.m., games, food, booths, followed by fireworks at dusk; (435) 752-2439.

Davis County

Antelope Island: Saturday, 9 a.m.- 6 p.m., pioneer activities; 2 p.m., buffalo chip toss contest, visitor center; 4 p.m., journal making at visitor center, Fielding Garr Ranch; Sunday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m., daily activities, pioneer games, visitor center; 11 a.m., handcart travels lecture, visitor center; Monday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m., pioneer activities, Fielding Garr Ranch; (801) 725-9263.

Bountiful: Friday, 6 p.m., Handcart Days grand parade, starts at Five Points and goes north on Main Street; fireworks at dusk, Celebration Park; Saturday, 7-10 a.m., breakfast at Bountiful City Park; 8-10 a.m., free swimming; 10 a.m.-noon, family games; noon-2 p.m., figure skating exhibit; (801) 298-6140.

Layton: Today, 8 p.m., free movie night, Kenley Centennial Amphitheater; Sunday, 8 p.m., free concert, Orange Blossom Special, Blue Grass 'n fancy fiddlin' music, Kenley Centennial Amphitheater; Monday, Taste of the Town; (801) 546-8575.

Syracuse City: Thursday, 8 p.m., concert in the park, Syracuse City Arts Council; (801) 825-1477.

Duchesne County

Altamont: Friday, 6 p.m., pre-rodeo concert at the Altamont Rodeo Arena; Saturday, 5:30-6:30 a.m., 5-K walk/run; 7-9 a.m., chuck wagon breakfast; 10 a.m., flag-raising followed by parade; 5 p.m., animal chase; 6 p.m., down-home barbecue; 7 p.m., auction; dusk, slide show, fireworks, followed by dance; (801) 454-3112.
