Years later, when I returned from Washington, she invited me to a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the dedication of a senior citizen room in the Central City Center. As we walked around, I tried to catch up on all the old neighbors who made the center possible. In typical Mrs. Kyremes fashion, she looked at me as though in disgust and asked, "What's the matter with you, Mr. Florez, don't you keep up?" After my being appropriately scolded and contrite, she proudly proceeded to tell me all about the new rooms and artwork done by senior citizens.

Like many immigrants, Mrs. Kyremes came to America to seek a better life. She was part of our Greek community that has contributed much to improve the quality of life for all of us. She was proud of her heritage, and she lived her life as many immigrants do. She had a strong work ethic, lived modestly, and was generous in giving to improve her community and the lives of others. She gave much including a scholarship at Westminster in her late son's name.

As with other immigrants, she was proud to be in America and felt a deep sense of duty to give back to her community. She helped us see the gift in giving.

Though she is gone, each time I drive down 600 South I will still see a proud woman, walking tall, with a bucket full of wrenches ready to fix her neighborhood.

Utah native John Florez has founded several Hispanic civil rights organizations, served on the staff of Sen. Orrin Hatch and on more than 45 state, local and volunteer boards. He also has been deputy assistant secretary of labor. E-mail: jdflorez@comcast.net
