If you go . . . Wyoming Pioneer treks
Short trek: Martin's Cove offers a trek that is about five miles round trip within the historic site. The trail leads to an area where pioneers took refuge from a fierce snowstorm in 1856 before being rescued.
Strenuous trek: The trek that begins at Sixth Crossing, which is next to Sweetwater Station on the Wyoming state highway map, extends for 28 miles one way and ends at a place called Rock Creek. The full trek takes two days. There is a campground with water and rest room facilities halfway along the trek for those making the two-day journey or those who want to skip the first half of the trek. Another campground is located at Rock Creek.
Be prepared: Wyoming weather can change quickly. Trekkers are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and to bring a hat, sunscreen, a jacket, water and food.
Cost: Groups of 25 or more people must pay a $4 per person permit fee to the Bureau of Land Management. No permit fee is required of individuals or families with fewer than 25 people or in no more than three vehicles.
