"Economically and socially, Washington County is becoming very much aligned with the economies of southern Nevada, which would be Mesquite and Las Vegas, because of its proximity to those areas."

The growth has brought challenges — most notably traffic. There are plans for a new St. George belt route, but county administrator Willie said that project will take time and money.

Lorri Kocinski-Puchlik, executive director of the St. George Area Chamber of Commerce, says the county's growth isn't limited to St. George. Smaller communities such as Hurricane, Ivins and Santa Clara are growing fast too, she said.

St. George is mentioned as a top place to retire in publications such as Kiplinger's and Money.cnn.com. But retirement is only part of the picture, said Kocinski-Puchlik. Young families are attracted to the area's strong economy and high quality of life, she said.

"I think we still have a small-town feel," Kocinski-Puchlik said. "One of the things that was brought out in the flood was the "Dixie spirit," strangers helping strangers."

Kim and Brad Stocking moved to St. George from Tooele about a year ago, for the outdoor recreation and mild climate. Now, Kim Stocking says her family enjoys regular outings to Zion National Park, Snow Canyon and city parks. Her children can play soccer almost year-round.

"We just have always visited the area and liked the option for the outdoors," she said. "It wasn't too far away from our family, we can still come and visit."
