'Joseph exhibit in both English and Spanish, runs through Jan. 15, 2006

Other sections trace the development of the scriptures that came to be known as the Doctrine and Covenants, a compilation of revelations received by Joseph, but many of which were not published during his lifetime.

The exhibit shows how Joseph studied — was tutored in Hebrew, for example — and also how he was refined through turmoil and opposition.

Some of his clothing is displayed, including the cloak he wore as leader of the Nauvoo Legion, which is draped on a life-size statue. Visitors can also touch a reproduction of Joseph's death mask.

"We wanted to give a sense of his presence," said Staker. "Accounts of his height varied, but he was roughly 6-feet tall and weighed about 200 pounds."

Of all the artifacts included, among the most touching for Staker are bits of the shirt and vest Joseph wore when he was murdered at Carthage. "They symbolize his ultimate sacrifice and make him seem so real."

Staker also particularly enjoys the information about maple sugaring and its importance in Joseph's life. "So many of the important events in Joseph's life happened in the spring. When we think of spring, we think of flowers and green grass. But early spring in upstate New York was very different than our springs. I think it gives you a greater appreciation of what their life was like."

As important as the tangible bits and pieces of Joseph's life that are on display, equally important are the intangible feelings Staker hopes people will get. A station at the end allows visitors to share their feelings about Joseph. "They will all be collected and added to the archives. Most share their testimony about the prophet and his work."

The exhibit is about history, but it is also about possibilities. As you look at how Joseph was prepared and tutored, you can see how other people can also be prepared and strengthened. You can see how things from his life might apply to your own life, Staker said.

Joseph's legacy, his influence is still just as strong, some 200 years after his birth. "He was an important figure," said Staker. "Like Moses, like Paul, he had an important role. Even non-LDS scholars recognize his role in American religious tradition."
