Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon is encouraging the UTA to study alternative rate structures for the low-income.

In a letter sent to the UTA board of trustees on March 2, Corroon said it was "an opportune time for UTA to conduct a feasibility study of alternative rate structures."

Options could include additional free fare zones and off-peak discounts for the low-income.

"It would be helpful to know the demographic mix of the lower-income riders in the county and what alternative rate structures might do to serve them and the larger public better," Corroon wrote.
