Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson is hoping free ice cream can generate some interest in the worldwide effort to curb global warming.

Anderson will be scooping ice cream at the Ben & Jerry's at The Gateway Wednesday beginning at 11 a.m. People who pledge to drive their automobile less, recycle more and conserve energy by replacing regular light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs will earn a free scoop.

Utah Power will also be giving out a free fluorescent light bulbs.

The free ice cream will be available from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. with Anderson slated to scoop some of the first ice cream promptly at 11.

The event, dubbed "Lick Global Warming," is occurring on the day when the Kyoto Protocol, an international pledge to end global warming by reducing greenhouse gases, goes into effect. Many nations have pledged to abide by the protocol's mandates to reduce emissions, but the United States has declined.

Anderson has frequently criticized President Bush's administration for not following the treaty, and the mayor has pledged to make sure Salt Lake City government abides by the protocol's call to reduce harmful emissions.
