But he does see it as a giant job, one that he would, however, be willing to run for again.

"There's so much more to do. I thought I could get it done in four years, but I couldn't," Poulson said. "It would be a huge job though, I agree."

Grover believes consolidation will bring about better efficiency, cut down on infighting and allow for better use of existing staff.

"Right now, your treasurer's office is mostly busy in October, November and December," Grover said. "The assessor's office is busier during March, April and May."

Grover believes the savings realized by combining the two jobs would free up money to hire an investment specialist for the county. At its Tuesday meeting, commissioners failed to reach a consensus on the idea, opting to wait and discuss the proposal again in April after the Legislature meets. As presented, the consolidation would become effective on Jan. 1, 2007, which would allow Hudman and Paulson to serve out their current terms and give the county time to gear up for the combined process.
