Following developments of the past week, I have had to reconsider my decision to stay on the ballot for Salt Lake County Mayor. In consultation with my family and my personal physician, I realize now the burden is too great to continue at this time.

My doctor has strongly advised that, in his opinion, with the extraordinary stress of the ongoing prosecution, I cannot continue a political campaign without unreasonably compromising my health. Recognizing the toll, I have decided to heed his advice.

It is a terrible thing to be wrongly accused. But regardless of the nature or validity of the charges, they must be taken seriously. I must now focus on a successful defense against false accusations.

I remain extremely proud of my record as Salt Lake County's first Mayor. There is much good that goes on at Salt Lake County that has sadly been temporarily overshadowed. I thank all the fine county employees who have continued to work hard during these difficult times. I thank all of my supporters and friends who have supported me through the good times and the bad. The hardest thing about ending my campaign efforts is letting down the many who have taken time to express messages of support.

As I stated last week, there is no part of me that wants to quit. But in the end, family and health must come first. Those are two things no one can take from us. I am so thankful for my family and for my dear husband, Reed. He has been a pillar of strength for me to lean on through all of these difficulties.
