Children are the future of our country, and we have an obligation to give them a quality education. The effects of No Child Left Behind have been devastating to schools throughout Utah and the nation. It imposes unfair standards, cuts important programs, requires too much testing and fails to provide the necessary funding for our schools. I will repeal the unnecessary standards of NCLB, giving local schools and school districts control over the curriculum. My plan also increases funding for Utah schools in the form of block grants and will put technology in classrooms and restore important programs such as the arts and music. Despite limited resources, Utah's schoolteachers do an outstanding job of educating our children. As partners with parents, they give our children the knowledge and skills required to function as productive members of society. We need to make things right for Utah's children and schoolteachers and reflect our commitment to them by providing them the resources and funding they need.

15. There is no federal term limit law for the U.S. Senate. Are you willing to say now that you will limit your own terms? If so, how long before you would retire and not seek re-election?

As I have done in my previous elected positions, I will serve only one term in the Senate. To me, it is critical that elected officials represent the people they were elected to serve, not special interests. As my opponent himself stated in 1992 (while promising to serve only two terms), a freshman senator who is willing to work hard can be very effective, even in a first term.

16. Early polls have shown a large advantage to Sen. Bennett. Will this large lead in the opinion polls influence how you campaign? What is your campaign strategy?

Story continues below
My campaign strategy today is the same as it was on the day I announced my candidacy. From the beginning, my goal has been to get out among the people of Utah and hear from them about their concerns. My wife and I rode more than a thousand miles on a tandem bicycle and have traveled from Logan to St. George to do exactly that. We've spoken with people face to face about the issues that affect them. Instead of talking to them through a television screen, I've been able to hear from them first-hand and gain a better sense of how I can better represent their needs in Washington.

17. How have you funded your campaign, and what, if anything, does it show voters about your candidacy?

My campaign has primarily been funded through individual contributions made by people in Utah. This shows that I am supported by the people, not special interests, and that I will be responsive to the needs of Utahns.

18. Why should Utah voters select you over your opponent? What accomplishments and achievements have you made that voters should be aware of?
