Utah Attorney General

9. As you know, public attorneys often say they have dual roles — they represent their state and officeholders, but they are elected by the public and represent it, also. As AG, how would you divide those roles? Would you put your responsibility to the public ahead of your legal responsibility to a particular officeholder, department or other state client?

I do not find my responsibility to the citizens of Utah in conflict with my responsibility to state entities, because those roles are determined by the law. The Utah Constitution states that as attorney general, I am the attorney for the state officers. The courts have ruled that as an elected representative of the people, I also have a duty to them. That independence is a responsibility the people expect and one which I honor. As I've previously stated, I am bound to the law — to uphold, enforce and defend the law, all personal agendas aside.

10. The above questions are aimed at finding out where you stand and why voters should pick you. Can you give us one (or more) reasons why voters should not pick your general election opponents (include minor party candidates if you wish)?

For example, does he lack experience, education, vision? Does he bring conflicts of interest or is he too closely associated with minority political views, etc.?

My opponents bring their own depth of legal expertise, but neither has the broad leadership experience necessary to run the state's largest law firm. This race is about more than being a good prosecutor or serving on community boards. This race is about leadership. This race is about managing the state's largest law firm with its 200 attorneys and 200 staffers. This race is about bringing public and private entities together to innovate meaningful solutions to protect Utah's children, solutions like the AMBER Alert and Netsmartz. This race is about staying one step ahead of criminals with efforts like the Identity Theft Task Force and cutting the number of meth labs by two-thirds. This race is about pulling out all stops to prevent high level nuclear waste from being stored just 40 miles from Salt Lake, endangering Utahns and threatening Hill AFB's viability. This race is about backing up law enforcement, working with legislators and protecting every Utahn. While my opponents tout their own "plans," I can back up my positions with actual experience and a proven record of independence, integrity and leadership.
