Another interesting thing about the poll, Jones noted, is that disaffected Republicans appear to be joining Corroon's camp somewhat more readily than Cook's. That is at least a temporary blow to the erstwhile Republican Cook, who hoped to reap more benefit from Workman's decline.

Corroon's support among Republicans has jumped from about 7 percent in previous polls to 21 percent now. Cook's has increased from 12 to 23 percent.

As for Workman, her Republican support has dropped from 59 to 20 percent. But hope springs eternal.

"We have to pay attention to these numbers," she said. "(But) once they learn the story, and if we can get into court and get this (case) decided before the election, we'll do OK."

Workman has said she has no intention of withdrawing, since she can't honestly say she's mentally incapable of continuing. Corroon has said he would consider legal action if she did. That fact makes the poll question regarding whether she should withdraw misleading, Coleman said.

"If she withdrew and got a doctor's note there would be a huge backlash," she said. "I don't think the way the law's written we can do it."

Workman can quit the campaign at any time, but without following the law's strictures her name would remain on the ballot and the Republicans wouldn't be able to replace her.

They could back a write-in candidate.

Democratic County Councilman Joe Hatch said "a write-in campaign would be the kiss of death in the mayoral race, but it might help in other (GOP) races."
