'Angels' making their DVD debut
'Star Trek' and 'Lucy' now also available on disc
"Touched by an Angel: The Complete First Season" (CBS/Paramount, 1994-95, not rated, $49.99). OK, it's a bit sappy and the stories are always too pat, but there's a lot of charm in this show about angels who help mortals with their problems thanks in no small part to the casting of Roma Downey and Della Reese in the lead roles (Jon Dye's angel of death would arrive in Season Two).
Also here is the two-part final episode from last year that saw Downey's character get a promotion.
Guest stars in this first-season collection include Paul Winfield (as a supervising angel, a role he would repeat in subsequent seasons), John Schneider, Dick Van Patten, Marion Ross, Nancy Allen, Brooke Adams, Malcolm Jamal-Warner, John Amos, Melissa Joan Hart and, believe it or not, Jack Black! And where else can you see competing news anchors/reporters Shelley Osterloh (KSL) and Bob Evans (Fox) working together?
Bonus features include audio commentaries by producers Martha Williamson and Jon Andersen, along with actors Tim Van Patten, Phylicia Rashad and Gregory Harrison.
Extras: Full frame, 13 episodes plus the two-part 2003 series finale, audio commentaries, "60 Minutes" interview w/Williamson, interview w/Williamson, making-of featurette, language options (English, Spanish), chapters.
"Star Trek The Original Series: The Complete First Season" (Paramount, 1966-67, not rated, $129.99, eight discs). The first "Star Trek" series is already on DVD, of course, with separately sold discs that hold two episodes each. But issuing each of the show's three seasons in box sets is much more convenient for collectors' shelves.
Gorgeous video transfers and remastered sound help make the adventures of the Starship Enterprise with Capt. Kirk (William Shatner), Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and the familiar crew even more appealing. Classic episodes "Space Seed" (the precursor to the second "Trek" film, "The Wrath of Khan"), "City on the Edge of Forever" and more are here, along with some new bonus material.
Extras: Full frame, 29 episodes, making-of featurettes, text commentary on select episodes, photo gallery, promo trailers, optional English subtitles, chapters.
"I Love Lucy: The Complete Second Season" (CBS/Paramount, 1952-53, not rated, b/w, $69.99, five discs). There are some hilarious episodes in this collection of second-season shows, including the classic that has Lucy trying to figure out a way to tell Ricky she's pregnant. Many funny pregnancy episodes follow, capped by the birth of Little Ricky, in what was the most-watched show in history.
