Provo has plans for extra cash from feds
"We don't just count the millions of dollars in Provo," said Provo Mayor Lewis Billings as he received a check for $3.7 million from the federal government. "We count the pennies."
Provo receives a chunk of change from the U.S. Housing and Urban Development department and this year there was a little extra cash in the bag.
This year, Provo received a $2.039 million grant that will be used on neighborhood revitalization programs.
Provo leaders can use the grant called a community development block grant any way they choose, as long as the money goes toward community development and housing. The city also must solicit public opinion on how it should be spent.
Billings said some of the money from the block grant will be used on economic-development initiatives and the "Pride in Provo" neighborhood-beautification campaign. Money also will go toward the preservation of historic buildings and rejuvenation of Provo's downtown.
Another $1.52 million will be used for down payment loans on houses, House of Hope and self-help new home construction.
George Zinn, representing HUD, was at a Monday presentation to give the money to Provo.
The city's plans were important because "what Provo does affects Utah," he said.
"Provo is a major, it's a mainstream city," Zinn said.
