Former BYU gymnast Guard Young won a silver medal as the U.S. men's team placed second. Young's 9.7 on the floor was the third highest among all competitors (see Pages A1, D2).

Highland High alum Logan Tom scored 10 points on spikes, two on blocks and two on serves as the U.S. women's volleyball team defeated Germany in four sets (see related story).

BYU swimmer Mark Chay swam the 200-meter freestyle in 1:54.70, finishing fifth in his heat and not qualifying for the semifinals. He will compete later in the 100-meter freestyle.

Heather Moody of Green River, Wyo., was in the starting water-polo lineup for the U.S. women's 7-6 victory over Hungary. She had one steal.

Canada's baseball team, which includes former Salt Lake minor leaguers Eric Cyr, Jeff Guiel and Ryan Radmanovich, defeated Italy, 9-3. Guiel played left field, had one hit in four at bats and scored one run. Radmanovich played right field and also was 1-4 with one run. Cyr pitched the eighth inning in relief and allowed no runs on one hit.

Former Salt Lake Stinger Clay Bellinger played split time between third base and shortstop in Greece's 5-4 loss to Cuba. He was 0-2 at the plate with two walks and two runs.

Former Utah Starzz players Elena Baranova, Michaela Pavlickova and Elisa Aguilar competed in women's basketball games. Baranova scored six points on 2-of-10 shooting in Russia's 75-56 loss to Australia. Pavlickova scored two points on 1-of-3 shooting in the Czech Republic's 80-61 loss to the United States (see related story). Aguilar scored one point in 10 minutes for Spain in its 75-67 win over China.

Weather

Mostly sunny with a high of 84 degrees and north winds blowing at 38 mph at the Olympic complex. The notorious Meltemi winds postponed rowing events until Tuesday and claimed the opening three races of sailing's 49er class.
