Democratic gubernatorial nominee Scott Matheson Jr. unveiled his "pledge" to Utah schoolchildren Friday — a nine-page plan that emphasizes that education will be his top priority. The plan emphasizes that many factors influence a child's potential for success.

"For our children to succeed in school, we must address their health, safety and nutritional needs," Matheson said. "We must help all children reach their full potential."

The plan, called "We Can Do Better: A Pledge to Utah's Children," includes a call to increase health-care coverage for low-income children, enhance child safety and improve child-care options for parents.

Matheson wants to expand the school breakfast program, increase the use of food stamps by eligible families, and help parents create safe environments for children at home.

"We need effective policies in education, health care, early childhood development, nutrition and child protection," Matheson said. "By investing in our children today, we will avoid difficult and costly problems in the future, and we will secure a more promising future for our state."

Matheson's plan is available on the Internet at www.mathesonforgovernor.com.
