Animal-rights extremism escalating

The event, Nyberg said, is a one-day education and music festival and a vehicle for the discussion of civil- and human-rights issues. Reports that ALF, ELF and the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals applied for the permit are false, he added.

"There are a lot of groups speaking that have nothing to do with any kind of animal-rights direct-action group," said Nyberg, 27. "It's not affiliated at all with people who do something like what they've done in Provo. That (idea) is the thing that is very convoluted with the police and the FBI."

Some who will speak will talk about different means of activism, including taking what is known as "direct action," but the idea is not to promote violence.

"It's about being aware of your rights and being aware of what's going on in the world," Nyberg said of the free event, which begins at 10 a.m. and continues through the day.

Salt Lake police will monitor the event and have ample resources to deal with any situation that gets out of hand, detective Kevin Joiner said.
