A 9-year-old boy from Roy drowned Monday in Lake Powell.

The boy and his 12-year-old brother had just gotten out of a boat and were walking along the shoreline near Moqui Canyon, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area spokeswoman Marianne Karraker said.

The rocks along the shoreline were slick with algae and the lake made a steep drop right at the shore.

The 9-year-old boy, who could not swim, slipped on the rocks and fell in about 3:42 p.m., Karraker said. His brother, described by officials as a weak swimmer, tried to help but also slipped and fell into the water.

The boys' uncle heard their cries for help and dived in the water after them but was only able to find the 12-year-old and pull him to shore, Karraker said. The boy was later flown by medical helicopter to Castleview Hospital in Price.

About an hour later a dive team recovered the body of the 9-year-old in 22 feet of water. The name of the boy was not released Tuesday.

The drowning was the first at Lake Powell this year.
