They've got big grins and are the first to jump to their feet (usually the only ones) when their competitor finishes playing. They're bubbling over with enthusiasm and, as surrogate parents, are often outwardly the loudest cheerleaders.

Of course, we can't forget the actual tourists. Looking hot and sweaty and toting backpacks or travel bags, they file in and out between individual competitors — and often individual pieces. They're almost always spotted on the right side of the auditorium (as opposed to the rest of the audience), looking a little bored and anxious to get on to the next activity.

And then there are the ushers. These, sweet, well-intentioned volunteers are so vigilant about cell phones — and yet they come in first place for loud whispers and candy wrappers. Nonetheless, they are appreciated for keeping thoughtless tourists in tow when they attempt egregious acts of bad concert behavior.

Although, admittedly, the drama in the audience pales in comparison to the drama onstage, the assembled cast and the ensuing interactions make for some interesting footnotes to the competition.

And when you're sitting through 11 hours of piano music in one day, it's nice to have a little dramatic relief.
