Former crewmen from one of the most storied fighting ships in World War II, the USS Salt Lake City, will have their annual reunion Sept. 18-21 in Salt Lake City.

The heavy cruiser earned the nickname "One Ship Fleet" during the sea battle off Cape Esperance in which it saved the cruiser Boise. The USS Salt Lake City was in 17 engagements in the Pacific, sank 15 ships, damaged 10 others and shot down 12 planes.

The Salt Lake was a day outside Pearl Harbor escorting the carrier Enterprise when the Japanese struck. It participated in the first battle action of the Pacific on Feb. 1, 1942, when she helped bombard Wotje Atoll. The ship survived the war and two atomic bombs in 1948 during atom bomb tests. She finally had to be torpedoed.

The reunion will be at the Sheraton City Centre Hotel, 150 W. 500 South.
