Junior golf tour making stop in Utah
It's the American Junior Golf Association Tour, and it will be making its first-ever visit to Utah this week. The three-day tournament, featuring top junior golfers from all over the country, will be played at the Glenwild Golf Club & Spa in Park City on Tuesday through Thursday.
Glenwild head professional Mark Aulerich said his club is excited to have the AJCA Tour coming to Utah.
"It's nice to see a national golf event come to the Park City area," he said.
The tournament includes 12- to 18-year-old golfers in boys and girls divisions. Seventy golfers have already qualified and the remaining spots will be filled by a qualifier held today at Park Meadows Country Club featuring more than 50 golfers. Players will have a practice round on Monday.
Eight local players are already in the field, including Daniel Reid, 17-year-old son of Provo's Mike Reid, a longtime player on the PGA Tour; and Dustin Pimm, a medalist in the 5A state tournament for Alta High School.
Others in the boys division include Jordan Fowles of Delta, Robert Shannon of Midway, Dane Jensen of Pleasant Grove, Danny Clark of Park City and Barrett DeWald and Steele DeWald of Park City. There are no Utah girls in the 21-golfer field.
U.S. OPEN LOCALS: There won't be as many as usual, but three golfers with Utah connections will tee it up at the U.S. Open this week at Shinnecock Hills in New York.
Draper's Mike Weir, Provo's Dan Forsman and BYU golfer Oscar Alvarez will be in the 156-player field, which tees it up Thursday in the 109th version of the Open.
Weir tees off Thursday at 10:20 a.m. MDT with Joey Sindelar and Michael Campbell. Forsman goes off with Paul Casey and Brian Gay at 6:10 a.m. MDT in the group right after Tiger Woods, while Alvarez tees off at 7 a.m. with David Faught and Leif Olson.
Last year Weir finished in a tie for third, coming off his Masters victory earlier in the year, although he was seven shots behind winner Jim Furyk. Forsman tied for 48th, 12 shots behind the winner. Alvarez, who will be a junior at BYU, is playing in his first U.S. Open.
SENIOR OPEN ENTRIES: Local Entries for the United States Senior Open must arrive at the USGA offices no later than Wednesday. The tournament is open to all seniors over 50 with a handicap of 3.4 or lower.
