Varela said Kennecott has put its money forward because its interest is in benefiting the entire area, not just its own development.

"Kennecott is a provider of benefits, rather than a beneficiary at this point," Varela said, adding Kennecott has shown leadership in striking a partnership with UTA and surrounding cities to get TRAX built.

As for the allegations she was hired by Kennecott because of her political ties, Varela called it, "an inaccurate hodgepodge of information."

When asked why union representatives would have such harsh criticism for Kennecott, Varela said she knew of no sour feelings during any recent negotiations that would spur the allegations.

Hansen said the unions are simply playing "watchdog" in looking out for the taxpayer's interests. Concerning Varela, Hansen said the union's concern is the fact that while Varela was on the UTA board, she was working for Kennecott Land.

When Varela resigned from the board in April of this year, she cited no conflict of interest but rather stated that she simply did not have enough time to commit to being on the board.

Jones said at no time while Varela was on the board did the board make any decisions key to the Mid-Jordan line.
