Williams borrowed the phrase from a South African poet, Breyten Breytenbach. She loves his words: "It is not enough to rail against the descending darkness of barbarity . . . One can refuse to play the game. A holding action can be fought. Alternatives must be kept alive. While learning the slow art of revolutionary patience."
