In 1996, Kathy made her first trip to Zambia after learning that more than a million children had been orphaned because of AIDS.
Her friends and family wondered, "What could one woman do?"
"I probably interviewed more than 1,000 street kids my first trip there," recalls Kathy. "I'd ask what they needed and they'd say, 'Ma'am, I just want a pair of shoes and a pencil so I can go to school.' It broke my heart."
Today, Mothers Without Borders is a nonprofit group with dozens of volunteers reaching out to hundreds of children every year. Kathy has started a children's village in Zambia, where street kids can go to school, learn to grow crops and be safe from predators.
"I can't help them all," she says, "but I can make a difference in the lives of a few. These kids feel invisible, but they do have a voice. Each of those little voices deserves to be heard."
