"She decided to back off, that the cramp would eventually work itself out and she'd keep running so she could place and help the team," he explained. "But she felt something tear after that."

Medical personnel worked on her after the race, confirming that she suffered a muscle tear that could sideline her for a couple of weeks, or the rest of the season. Magill, considered the top female runner in Utah the past two seasons and perhaps the finest ever, is being heavily recruited by almost every major collegiate track program. Mountain View is currently ranked seventh nationally in girls entering the Great American Road Race in North Carolina on Sept. 27, a meet Magill will likely now miss.

She finished fifth in the race, one spot behind teammate Heidi Houle.

In team competition, Cedar placed second in boys, followed by Davis, Orem and Fremont. Behind the Bruin girls were Davis, Fremont, Skyline and Timpangos.

Next week, runners can choose between two invitationals--the Murray Invite that will be run Friday night, Oct. 19, and the Orem-Kiwanis Invite at UVSC on Saturday, Oct. 20. Many of the top teams are planning to take the next weekend off to prepare for the North Carolina races.
