Sheriff, FLDS city manager trade accusations

"What we're dealing with in Texas has got the same attributes as to what's happening here, said property owner and church spokesman Willie Jessop. He said officers in both states were abusing their power in order to harass the residents of both communities and waste taxpayers' money.
"This multipurpose facility (the county, state and federal offices) was brought in not for the service of the people. It was brought in on a vendetta," he said. "We need law enforcement in the area. We need the services in the area, but we need it done with an element to help."
Jessop said just like in Texas, where officials raided the church's YFZ Ranch and placed their children in state custody, law enforcement in Arizona is abusing its power. He displayed picture after picture of Mohave County sheriff's deputies parked along residential streets, pulling over vehicles near Mohave Community College, speaking with people in a field and parking near road intersections waiting for speeders.
"This was the retaliation the state put out. This was what the community was faced with all week," he said.
"Y'all need to be aware. It's coming at you," Jessop said. "We have put the feds on notice. We've put the governors on notice. We cannot afford another YFZ in Colorado City. We welcome law enforcement. We do not welcome vindictive hatred toward people. We need these people to be treated as citizens."
Jessop said what is really needed is protection for the community.
"There's crimes taking place, we acknowledge that. We needed your help and we're asking for it," he said. "If there's a need for a facility, lets work together."
"It's not the lack of need for the facility, that's the issue. It the attitude and what the facility is for," he said. "It only benefited a vindictive action."
The sheriff expressed frustration with Jessop's comments.
"I find it interesting that Mr. Jessop is making threats against Mohave County and myself," Sheahan said. "I will continue to do the job I was elected as sheriff to do. I will enforce the laws in incorporated as well as unincorporated areas. … If Mr. Jessop thinks these threats are going to deter my actions to bring honest law enforcement to that community in northern Arizona, he's foolishly mistaken." The Colorado City Police Department has had six officers decertified in the last few years, he said. "There's a pattern of misconduct."
"My officers will be up there any time I wish them to be there. They will go wherever I want them to go in Mohave County. They will do whatever I inform them to do," Sheahan said. "He's going to see as many as there was in the past and there's going to be no change."
He asked the board's support in looking for a new county facility in the area and said the Attorney General's Office might be willing to help with the cost.
The board unanimously approved staff to look for a new facility for county, state and federal offices in the Colorado City area.
