Pair rob taco stand, pizza store
One of the robbers wielded a shotgun and the other waved a large knife during the West Valley $200-taco-stand heist at 3875 W. and 3500 South in West Valley at about 8 p.m.
The robbers didn't have access to those inside the stand, which had already closed for the night, so they unplugged the stand's electricity and waited for one of the workers to unlock the door and investigate the power outage, said West Valley City Police Sgt. M.T. Johnson.
"When they (the employees) opened the door, they robbed them," Johnson said.
The two men took the cash and fled. Police unleashed K9s in the area and searched nearby apartments. More than an hour later, two men, matching the same description, robbed a Domino's Pizza in Riverton at 12652 S. 2700 West.
"It's way too close to be a coincidence," said Salt Lake Sheriff"s Lt. Jay Southam. "It could be gang related, maybe part of an initiation."
The men entered the restaurant when there were no customers present and demanded cash. They again pointed a shotgun and showed a knife while making their threats, this time to a male who was working alone.
Witnesses described the men as thin, English and Spanish speaking Hispanics, 18 to 20 years old.
