Utah State's backfield is going to get a little more crowded and a lot fast.

Michael Smith, a 5-foot-9, 198-pound running back from Eastern Arizona College, will transfer to USU and create some competition for playing time among the Aggies' returning players, the Deseret News has learned.

As a sophomore for the 8-3 Gila Monsters, Smith ran for 1,002 yards and 11 touchdowns. According to scout.com, Smith has 4.35 speed and will create an instant threat for the Aggies.

Smith is already a fully qualified student-athlete and will enroll at USU this week and be eligible to participate in spring drills.

EAC was a run-heavy team and Smith was a second-team all-conference runner. His teammate, quarterback Tony Reid, rushed for 1,238 yards in the Gila Monsters' option attack.
