Utah's first baby of year comes at 12:12 a.m. in Dixie
Logan's parents are Casey and Shantelle Hatt of La Verkin. He is an electrician, and she works for Wells Fargo Bank.
The baby was born at Dixie Regional Medical Center, and "everything went well," according to Terri Draper, the center's spokeswoman.
Logan weighed 8 pounds 14 ounces and is 21 inches long.
The Hatts, like other parents of newborns, will get a gift package from the hospital filled with traditional baby items, but since Logan was the first baby of the year, his package will include a $100 gift certificate.
Shantelle Hatt said she went to a doctor's appointment on Wednesday and the doctor discovered that things were already under way. "They asked if I wanted to have the baby today (Wednesday), and I said sure," she said.
However, her son had his own ideas about when to arrive and chose 12 minutes after midnight.
"We were hoping for a tax write-off, but we'll take the first baby of the year," she said, laughing.
He is the first grandchild on his father's side of the family and the second grandchild on his mother's side.
Casey Hatt said Logan's due date was supposed to be Jan. 13, but things turned out differently. "I'm just happy that he's healthy and made it finally."
As for his wife, Hatt said she was a champion through the delivery.
A nursery awaits at home, and everything is ready.
LeAyn Hatt, the baby's paternal grandmother, said she and other female family members have been busy shopping and there is quite an assortment of going-home outfits for the newborn when he and his mother are released from the hospital.
"I think he's really beautiful," said LeAyn Hatt, who came to see the baby shortly after the birth and got to cuddle Logan. "He's our first grandchild and we're just stunned."
She is already eager to begin baby sitting.
"Anytime they want to bring him, we'll take him."
A few other Utah hospitals had some early arrivals on New Year's Day, but none showed up as early as Logan.
