Making the case

Making the case

Golf Digest is staging a writing contest, whereby the winner earns the right to play in a foursome that includes Michael Jordan and two other celebrities.

The contest asks entrants to explain in just six words why they can break 100 in the Golf Digest U.S. Open Challenge.

I plan to submit the following arguments:

"I used to date Elin Nordegren."

"I have seen 'Caddyshack' 51 times."

"I almost always score my IQ."

White on white

Remember the University of Utah's black-out for the TCU football game?

Now BYU basketball is sponsoring a Cougar "white-out." Fans are being asked to wear white tees and sweatshirts for the Jan. 3 game against Wake Forest.

Just wondering: Aren't the terms "white-out" and Marriott Center sort of redundant?

Add white out

If BYU really wants everyone in white shirts, it can always distribute all 22,000 tickets at the Missionary Training Center down the street.

Dog of a deal

The house formerly owned by Michael Vick has failed to sell at an auction.

The five-bedroom home in rural Virginia got no qualified bidders Friday, since none brought the required $20,000 cashier's check.

The owner, who originally bought the property from Vick, set a minimum bid of $590,000.

The 4,600-square-foot house includes 15 acres, a full-size basketball court, outbuildings and, of course, kennels. But so far it's had no takers.

Maybe they should list it in the classifieds under the title: "Country stunner! Dog-lover's retreat!"

Making a pitch

Strange incident Monday in Baghdad, where an Iraqi TV journalist hurled his shoes at President Bush.

Sources say that upon reviewing the video, the Yankees immediately offered Muntadhar al-Zeidi a $100 million contract.

Risky business

Speaking of the Yankees, Utah Blaze coach Ron James had a few words on the Bronx Bombers after the AFL suspended its 2009 season Monday.

"It's hard when you see the Yankees give a $161 million offer to one player when you know that much money could save our entire league," said James.

Sad part is it may not even save the Yankees.

Fuzzy math

Ex-Jazz assistant Kenny Natt has been named interim coach of the Sacramento Kings, and he credits Jerry Sloan with instilling his coaching philosophy.

"What I've told these guys is all I'm asking them is (for) hard work and discipline each day in practice, because that's where you win basketball games," he told reporters. "Not during the game. Games are won in practice."

In that case, that makes the Jazz 26-0, rather than 15-11, right?
