KATMANDU — Police say a school bus skidded off a bridge on a highway in southern Nepal, killing at least 22 people and injuring several more.

Police say the bus was returning after a school picnic when the vehicle skidded off the highway late Thursday near Mukundapur village. The area is about 125 miles southwest of the capital Katmandu.

Police said in a statement that 22 people were killed, but did not immediately have a breakdown of how many were children.

The statement said the injured have been taken to various hospitals.

Venezuela: Power shuts down

CARACAS — A power outage briefly left much of Venezuela's capital and surrounding suburbs without electricity on Thursday, snarling traffic and stranding people in elevators.

The outage hit about 4 p.m., prompting authorities to temporarily close Caracas' subway and evacuate commuters.

Javier Alvarado, president of the Caracas Electricity Co., told state-run television that officials were investigating the cause of the blackout.
