Couple stole watch to pay court fines, police say
Police say a man entered Losee Jewelers, 2230 N. University Parkway in Provo, on Nov. 20 and asked to look at an expensive watch, according to a police affidavit filed in 4th District Court.
Once he was holding it, the Provo man, 25, ran out of the store and into the car where his fiance, 24, from Springville was waiting, according to the affidavit.
Police say the fiance drove recklessly and quickly through the narrow parking lot as they fled.
During follow-up investigations, police learned a watch with the same serial number and description had been pawned at a store in Midvale, according to the affidavit.
With the information from the pawn shop about the sellers, police tracked down the woman Tuesday.
She confessed that she had taken her fiance to the store to steal the watch, and even backed their car into a parking stall so they could leave quickly, according to the affidavit.
After they got the watch, the couple pawned it and received $2,000, which they used for living expenses and to pay the man's court fines, the affidavit states.
Police then confronted the man who confirmed his fiance's story.
The woman and man were both booked into the Utah County Jail for investigation of theft.
